In FIG. 1, a chassis, designated as S100, constitutes the primary structural framework of the autonomous mobile robot. In one embodiment, the chassis S100 serves as a robust platform upon which the drive system, sensor suite, energy management components, and additional modules are mounted. The design of the chassis S100 is optimized for the operational demands of a warehouse environment, ensuring that the robot maintains stability and alignment during dynamic maneuvers. Materials and construction techniques for the chassis S100 are selected to resist wear and impact, thereby facilitating reliable performance over extended periods and allowing for seamless integration with other robotic subsystems.
An autonomous mobile robot is provided for dynamic warehouse applications. The robot features a robust chassis that incorporates, among other components, a drive system operable to move the chassis (S102). This drive system is designed to effectively impart motion to the chassis and is configured to provide precise control over speed and direction, enabling the robot to navigate complex warehouse layouts with efficiency. One implementation provides an autonomous mobile robot designed for efficient and dependable warehouse operations through advanced navigation and sensor fusion capabilities. A key element of the system is the navigation controller S108, which is configured to plan and execute obstacle-avoiding paths in real time based on the unified environmental map. The controller S108 receives the integrated map generated by the sensor fusion module and processes data from various sensors to detect obstacles, dynamically adjusting the robot's trajectory to ensure secure passage even in congested or unpredictable environments.
By continually evaluating the surroundings, the navigation controller S108 facilitates rapid adaptation to changes in warehouse conditions. It effectively translates the environmental map into precise navigation decisions, thereby enabling the robot to maneuver through complex layouts while avoiding collisions. FIG. 2 illustrates a flowchart of the components in an autonomous mobile robot system. It starts with a mobile chassis (S200), followed by a drive system (S202). A machine vision module (S206) is configured to identify item dimensions and orientation on a shelf. The robot is equipped with an onboard camera that captures real-time image data (S704). This setup is complemented by a digital map storing the warehouse's structural features (S706). A fusion processor is configured to perform several tasks: it calculates UWB-based coordinates using time-difference-of-arrival (TDoA) measurements between the tag and anchors (S710), extracts visual landmarks from the image data (S712), aligns these landmarks with corresponding features in the digital map (S714), and finally generates corrected robot coordinates by fusing UWB-based coordinates with landmark alignment data (S716).
The ultra-wideband (UWB) tag, designated as S700, is mounted on a mobile robot. This tag is an integral component of the robot's positioning system, interacting with a network of UWB anchors that are strategically placed throughout the warehouse. Utilizing time-difference-of-arrival (TDoA) measurements between the tag and the anchors, the UWB system computes precise robot coordinates. The system includes S704, an onboard camera designed to capture real-time image data. In one embodiment, the sensor fusion module S106 is configured to adjust the relative weighting of inputs received from the sensor suite S104 based on detected environmental conditions. When the LiDAR sensor within S104 detects characteristics associated with an elevated concentration of dust or fog—such as attenuated signal returns or increased scattering—the sensor fusion module S106 interprets these conditions as detrimental to the reliability of LiDAR-based measurements. In response, S106 dynamically increases the reliance on the vision camera included in S104. This increased reliance is implemented by modifying the sensor fusion algorithm to prioritize the stereo vision camera's output over that of the LiDAR sensor under such adverse conditions. Coexistence protocols, such as timesharing or antenna sharing, are implemented to ensure that UWB and WiFi can operate simultaneously without interfering with each other, as real-world studies have shown that UWB transmissions do not measurably impact WiFi performance even in dense environments45. This dual-mode approach leverages the strengths of both technologies, enabling robust wireless communication alongside real-time, location-based services within the same infrastructure.
Concurrently, the onboard camera captures real-time image data from which visual landmarks are extracted and subsequently aligned with corresponding features in a digital map that stores structural characteristics of the warehouse.
